We wanted to try out Oretha Senior Daycare Centre for my mum, who is 93 and moves around with a walking frame. In the 2 weeks of sending her, the changes in my mum are notable. My mum goes five days a week (9am to 5pm) to the daycare. She's mentally more alert and responsive and moves with greater ease. She carries back such fun stories about their activities and even brought back a scented wax sachet, which they did as Mother's Day activity. Oretha, the founder,  has weaved in activities like papercraft, jigsaw puzzles, writing, wordsearch, sudoku, etc, to bring about this animation I see in my mum. To top it, they even have simple cooking recipe sessions on some days, which they then have for tea...an uplifting exercise.
Attending to my mum at home, gets me short fused, but when I see  Oretha and her team of caregivers attending to the seniors with so much patience, laughter and banter that I myself feel is so heart-warming. The centre is clean, bright, cheerful (and air-conditioned) with artworks by the seniors hanging on the walls to boost spirits. I do feel reassured that my mum is in good hands.
My mum, who is a hearty eater, tells me that food is good and varied. Now at the end of the day, we have current topics to talk about when previously dinners were rather a quiet affair....
